👉 Fireclay is the "premium" material for building a traditional wood-fired oven. Indeed, the major asset of kaolin is its exceptional thermal inertia since it can store a massive amount of heat and release it slowly: once the fire has died down or been pushed to the side, the shell keeps giving off a gentle, constant heat. This lets you bake pizzas at high temperature (350−400°C), then follow on with bread, roasts, or even leave dishes to simmer all night long.
🔥Another advantage, and no small one: its resistance to thermal shock! Unlike natural stone or standard concrete, which could shatter, fireclay is designed to withstand sudden changes in temperature. It does not deteriorate despite repeated heating and cooling cycles: its 5 cm thick walls will give it durability and a long service life.
🔥It also has a low coefficient of expansion, which limits the appearance of major structural cracks.
🔥 Finally, a well-built clay oven is an investment for several decades: it is not affected by corrosion and stands up very well to the abrasion caused by logs and pizza peels rubbing against it.
This kit includes all of the following materials:
✅ The 5 cm single-piece refractory clay shell with an internal diameter of 60 cm
✅ The calcium silicate boards to insulate the supporting slab (often standard concrete) from the heat of the oven floor
✅ The dense beige firebricks (220 x 110 x 30 mm) for building the oven entrance and the cladding around the flue hood
✅The medium grey 1100° refractory mortar needed to lay the bricks and the inside of the oven entrance
✅ The stainless steel flue hood with control damper for the smoke outlet
✅ The black steel glazed door, 53.5 x 39.5 cm, with manual air inlet
✅ The flexible insulation: refractory wool blanket with an aluminium facing to wrap the outside of the dome in 2 crossed layers, and the wire mesh to hold it in place.
Technical data:
- Internal diameter of the shell: 60 cm
- External diameter of the shell: 70 cm
- Width of the oven entrance: 40 cm
- Minimum dimensions of the supporting slab: 94 (W) x 104 (D) cm
