Overview:
Calcium silicate boards are more than just insulation: used as a fire barrier, they are very light yet very rigid and are suitable for building fireplaces. They are available in 2 thicknesses: 30 and 50 mm.
Made by pressing, calcium silicate boards have exceptional crushing strength. However, if the material is loaded beyond these characteristics, it does not deform or sag but breaks.
The boards are dust-free, rigid, smooth and easy to install. Their lightness and composition allow them to be used without a metal frame, which avoids any damage caused by differential expansion between materials. Calcium silicate is self-supporting and withstands high temperatures but must never be exposed to fire and flames.
Applications:
- Insert cladding
- Building fireplace hoods
- Insulating the wall behind wood stoves, pellet stoves...
- Sound insulation of walls, ceilings and floors
- Heat shield, fire protection
- Insulating the hearths of wood-fired ovens
Product benefits:
- Total fire protection
- Reduced heat loss
- Extremely lightweight construction
- Environmentally friendly building product
- Physiologically harmless
- No odours given off
- Easy to machine and install with woodworking tools
- No odours given off
- Masonry lining and thermal insulation in a single material
- Easy to machine and install with woodworking tools
- Space saving thanks to thinner insulation
Installation instructions:
How calcium silicate is installed depends on the existing substrate and its use.
Insulating the wall behind the wood-burning appliance:
If the wall to be insulated is combustible (plasterboard, timber, etc.), there must be an air gap between the existing wall and the silicate board.
To do this, simply build a "frame" of calcium silicate at least 3 cm thick, screwed and glued to the existing wall. The silicate boards are then glued / screwed to this frame (making sure the screws used do not reach the existing wall), leaving an empty space of a few centimetres at the top and/or bottom (between board and floor and/or between board and ceiling) to allow air to circulate. Use fully threaded wood screws.
If the wall to be insulated is not combustible (brick, stone...), the air gap is not essential and in this case the boards can be glued directly to the existing substrate, provided it is reasonably flat.
Building a fireplace hood or fully cladding an insert:
The rules are the same as above, depending on the nature of the existing wall.
To clad an insert, a few rules must be followed, such as creating a decompression chamber at the top and fitting a ventilation grille to ensure hot air can circulate.
We recommend watching the video below before starting work:
General rules:
- The existing substrate must be flat to avoid any distortion, which could cause breakage.
- Before gluing, wet the silicate boards to saturate the silicate and ensure good adhesion of the adhesive.
- It is important to use the special silicate adhesive in a pouch (to bond the boards to each other) or the special silicate adhesive in a 20 kg bag (to bond them over their entire surface, using a notched tile trowel for example).
- A distance of 10 cm must be kept between the stove and the silicate.
Finishing calcium silicate boards:
- The boards can be covered with a thin render: in this case, first apply the special silicate primer with a roller to prepare the surface.
- It is essential to use the special silicate render: a first coat is often recommended to smooth out all imperfections, followed by a second, very thin coat that can be tinted (the render is white).
- Board joints can be filled with the special silicate adhesive or covered with paper tape. Corners can be protected with composite corner profiles.
- The boards can also be covered with facing or stone using the special silicate adhesive in a 20 kg bag.
