The masonry heater appeals through its promise: one or two fires a day, and gentle heat released for 12 to 24 hours. That leaves the question everyone asks before taking the plunge: what budget should you allow? Honest answer: from under €3,000 for a masonry cooker kit to over €20,000 for a bespoke piece by a craftsman. Here is what you need to place your project, item by item.

What determines the price of a masonry heater?

Four factors make up most of the price: the heat-storing mass (often 1 to 2 tonnes of firebricks — this is what stores the heat), whether or not there is a baking oven, the finish (exposed bricks, render, glazed tiles) and above all how it is built: self-assembly kit or bespoke craftsman build.

The masonry heater kit: from €2,700 to €5,500

The Finnish-style kit, like Tiileri , is the most economical route to a real masonry heater. The refractory elements arrive ready to assemble, like a very serious construction set. As a guide, from our shop:

  • "Aida", round glazed heater (1.4 kW continuous): from around €3,450 ;
  • "Sofia", the classic in brick or render (2.2 kW continuous, ~1,980 kg): from €3,530 to €3,840 depending on finish and flue outlet;
  • "Amanda", with baking oven: from €4,960 to €5,380 ;
  • the "Helmi" and "Heidi" masonry cookers (8.2 kW, hob and oven): from €2,660 to €3,080.

Allow a day's work for two people for assembly — and so you are not left alone with the plan, our assembly support (video call + craftsman's advice) is charged at €80.

Bespoke craftsman builds: generally above €10,000

A bespoke masonry heater, designed for your room and built by a professional, is in another league: depending on the mass, the cladding (bricks, glazed tiles, clay renders) and the complexity of the project, the budgets we see most often range from €10,000 to €25,000 including installation. It is the choice of a unique object, optimised for your home.

Additional costs not to forget

  • Delivery : a kit weighs 1 to 2 tonnes and travels on a pallet by freight — in the region of €160 to €450 depending on the department and weight;
  • Connection : flue starter kit (~€314), AirBox-type air inlet (~€269); and if the house has no chimney flue, creating one is the biggest item in the project;
  • The base : 1 to 2 tonnes concentrated on ~1 m² call for a load-bearing floor or a suitable plinth;
  • Installation supplies for traditional builds: clay and grog or refractory mortar.

Kit or bespoke: which budget for which project?

If you like doing things yourself and your room can take a standard model, a kit divides the budget by three to five compared with an installed bespoke build, without sacrificing the principle that makes a masonry heater so worthwhile: heat storage. Bespoke keeps the edge as soon as the layout is unusual (heated bench, offset oven, very large mass) or you want to hand the whole thing over.

A cost to put into perspective

Wood remains one of the cheapest forms of energy, and a masonry heater makes the most of it: one or two brisk fires a day, high efficiency, very little ash. Over the lifetime of the build — several decades, with bricks replaceable individually — the real annual cost is remarkably low.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really build your own masonry heater?

Yes, that is precisely what kits are for: the elements are numbered and fit together according to a precise plan. A competent DIYer, with a second pair of hands for the lifting, will spend one to two days on it. Our assembly support secures the key steps.

Are there any financial incentives?

Support schemes for wood heating change regularly and generally require installation by a certified professional. Before deciding between a kit and professional installation, check the conditions in force at the time of your project.

How long does a masonry heater last?

Well built and well used, a masonry heater is passed down: the main structure lasts for decades and the wearing parts (firebox bricks, seals, hardware) are replaced individually.
