Self-build of a Finnish-type masonry heater with the help of plans and materials supplied by Cœur de Foyer.

For this renovation project on an old building, the client wanted to install a self-built masonry heater.

After several exchanges, including photos of the large living room where the heater would stand, we put our idea to him:

A fully masonry-built Finnish-type heater with a log store, an oven and a hardware pack comprising a firebox door, an ash pit door and cleaning doors recognised for this type of heat-storage firebox.

Here are some of the plans showing the masonry heater with the core in its final form and the cladding from several angles.

To make construction simple and enjoyable, we provided the customer with layer-by-layer plans showing the brick layout in detail, so that he could assemble his masonry heater as easily as possible. Here you can see the plans compared with reality, with the fitting of the air inlet damper and the cleaning door.

Masonry above the combustion chamber and the baffle to prepare for fitting the oven while ensuring good flue gas circulation.

Building the oven with the flue gases circulating all around it; the refractory blanket allows the bricks to expand without compromising the strength of the joints, while ensuring airtightness.

Closing the oven and the heater as a whole.

All the masonry was built with firebricks and refractory slabs with 40% alumina ; bonding was done with ready-to-use silicate grout to keep the joints thin.

A system for distributing heat to the upper floor has been built in. It is a masonry air gap rising between the log store and the flue liner, then ventilating the upper part of the masonry heater and opening out on the upper floor.

The finished heater. You can see the two parts: the firebox section with the log store at the side (all the hardware comes from Narvi in Finland) and the baking oven section with the seat and the flue liner on the left.

To sum up, it is not difficult to build your own Finnish masonry heater, provided the preliminary support is well thought out and defined.

A few notions of masonry are enough to install a heat-storage stove that will bring real added value to your home and allow you to heat your house in a healthy, economical and ecological way.
